How Sedation Ensures Comfortable Treatment

cerritos sedation

Do you feel nervous about seeing the dentist? We know that sometimes dental anxiety stands between people and the treatments they need, particularly if these treatments are more involved oral surgeries. But we can help with calming solutions! In today’s blog, your Cerritos, CA, dentist talks about dental sedation.

When You Need to Receive Dental Sedation

When do we suggest dental sedation for our patients? Our team may recommend this for patients undergoing more extensive treatments, such as tooth extraction or dental implant placement. This is also helpful for people with dental anxiety, as their phobias could stand between them and the treatments they require. This is also helpful for people with special needs or an overactive gag reflex, so they can undergo care in a comfortable and relaxed state. But how do we choose which one is right for you?

How We Select an Option for You

The option we select for our patients will be based on a number of different factors. We will look at your age, weight, medical history, anxiety levels, and any medications you are currently taking. With this information, we can choose the right sedation, or a combination of them, to help you enter a deep state of calm and relaxation.

Three Different Calming Options

We have three different options available. The most common is a mild form known as nitrous oxide, which is given in a gas form. This helps patients stay calm and conscious, with little to no memory of the procedure. The effects wear off right away.

We also have oral sedation, given in a pill or liquid form prior to the treatment. You enter a deeper state of calm, but remain conscious, and will have no memory of the procedure. The effects will take time to wear off, so have someone on hand to take you home. We could also combined oral and nitrous oxide as needed too, providing calming for people who want to avoid general anesthesia. The deepest form available is IV, and is administered intravenously. This is the deepest option and provides a sleep-like state for patients. The effects take time to wear off, so someone needs to be on hand to take you home afterward!

If you have any questions about how we offer a calm and relaxing visit with dental sedation, or if you think this could help you when you see us, then contact our team today to learn more. We want to ensure your visit is a comfortable one, so you look forward to your next appointment!
