Oral surgery could be necessary to avoid wisdom tooth impaction, address missing teeth with dental implants, and or even strengthen your jaw with a grafting procedure. To ensure the procedure is comfortable regardless of how extensive it is, we could offer calming solutions. In today’s blog, your Cerritos, CA, dentist talks about dental sedation.
When You Need a Calming Medication
When do we prescribe dental sedation for our patients? This could be necessary when you undergo more extensive treatments and oral surgeries, such as tooth extraction, placing dental implants to tackle tooth loss, or conducting jawbone grafting to strengthen the lower jaw in preparation for dental implant placement. We could also offer these solutions for patients with anxiety about seeing the dentist, so they have a calm and comfortable treatment experience. This can even aid those with special needs that could complicate the ability to undergo treatment!
Choosing the Sedation for You
We have three different options to choose from, but how do we select one for our patients? We will first look at their age, weight, medical history, and any medications they are currently taking. Next, we will assess their anxiety levels and any special needs. With these factors in mind, we can choose the most appropriate calming solution for our patients.
Our Options
The mildest form is nitrous oxide, which is administered through a mask over the nose. You breathe in a gas and enter a deep state of calm with little to no memory of the procedure, but you remain conscious and able to respond to the dentist. The effects wear off once the procedure ends, you could even drive yourself home or return to work or school.
Oral sedation is taken in pill or liquid form and is much deeper. You stay conscious but will have no memory of the procedure. The effects take time to wear off, so you need someone ready to bring you home afterward. We could also combine this with nitrous oxide in some situations.
The deepest form of calming is administered intravenously. IV helps you enter a deep and sleep-like state and is excellent for people with major phobias of the dentist. The effects will take time to wear off, so be sure someone is on hand to take you home afterward.
