While there is a lot of misinformation out there about cancer and prevention – there are a few things we know for sure. First, to prevent (and fight) cancer, you’ll need a strong immune system. The best way to achieve that is to make sure you’re getting all of the proper nutrients each day. Next, knowing the risks to contracting oral cancer can help to avoid becoming considered “at-risk.” However, with oral cancer, age is one of the biggest risk factors – and while we can’t control getting older, we can control our unhealthy lifestyles and habits (like smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol).
1.Keep Practicing Excellent Oral Hygiene
Although it may not feel like brushing and flossing your teeth has anything to do with contracting oral cancer, when you keep up with your oral hygiene you help your overall health. The healthier your body is, the easier it is for your immune system to fight off infections and diseases (like cancer).
2.Catch The Cancer Early On
As long as you’re visiting your dentist as they recommend, they’ll screen for oral cancer each time you visit. Catching the cancer early on increases your chances for fighting and getting rid of the disease altogether!
3.Choose A Healthy Lifestyle
We already know that the healthier your body is, the stronger your immune system is – the best way to achieve a healthy body, is by choosing a healthy lifestyle. This means exercising daily, eating healthy, and reducing any unhealthy habits you may have – especially smoking tobacco or drinking alcohol. And because we’re getting into the season of Spring, which means Summer is right around the corner – limit your sun exposure. While you may use sunscreen, how often do you actually put sunscreen on your lips? If you don’t, do you use a chapstick that contains some sort of SPF? If you’re going to be out in the sun, don’t forget to cover your lips!
