IV Sedation Q&A: Is It For Me?

Are you ready for dental care but you’re stuck with one last question: Is IV sedation for me? Truth be told, we’ll have to talk with you about dental sedation to find out if the IV route is, in fact, going to work wonders for you or if perhaps you should go in a different direction with sedation. As for the general stuff that helps you figure out your candidacy ahead of time, a quick question and answer session will do the trick!

Questions and Answers

Question: Is IV sedation a good idea for me? I’m not overly fond of needles but I don’t mind them if it’s necessary.

Answer: It might be. We offer nitrous oxide, as well, if you wish to avoid needles. However, if you don’t mind them much, keep in mind that the needle we use for this type of dental sedation is extremely slim and tiny. You’ll barely notice it.

Question: How do you make sure I’m completely safe, while I’m under this type of sedative? I know I’ll technically still be awake during IV sedation but will you check my breathing?

Answer: We will check everything, all of your vitals, consistently and can change the amount of sedative you receive to keep you comfortable and safe. We may also have a trusted anesthesiologist on hand for additional monitoring.

Question: If my main concern is just that I feel a tiny bit nervous about my care, I want to be able to relax, but then I also want to be able to head home or back to work, is IV sedation going to be okay?

Answer: In this case, it’s not a good fit. Here’s why: Our intravenous option for sedation is extremely relaxing (much stronger than you need) and it’s going to last for many hours after your visit is over (so you can’t return to work, etc.). Nitrous oxide is a better selection.
