Many dental visits take place without the need for sedation. New patient visits, twice-yearly exams and cleanings, and cosmetic consultations are just a few examples of visits that often do not involve sedation. However, there may be times we will discuss sedations options with you, or you may want to bring up sedation topics in our office. Our goal is to make sure you are comfortable during your visit, and sedation is sometimes the answer.
#1: When
You can discuss sedation options with us at any time. For patients with dental anxiety, the option of dental sedation may make it possible for necessary work to be performed. If appointments are skipped, or needed dental treatment is put off, problems can worsen and grow. Dental sedation can be applied differently for different situations. Your dentist can help you decide what is best for you.
#2: Why
Dental sedation is used to make you comfortable during any procedure that has to potential for unease. Although the outer (enamel) layer of the tooth does not have nerve endings, when it is breached by the decay of a cavity, or other reasons, the more sensitive inner portions of the tooth may need care. Sedation can also help avoid excess or unanticipated movements while a procedure takes place. Some patients have a heightened natural anxiety, and sedation can help calm those feelings.
#3: How
One type of dental sedation is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. The patient inhales and exhales a precise mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which leads to a warm and slightly euphoric feeling, in inhibits the sensation of pain. The gas does not stay in the body, and effects were off almost immediately when the gas is no longer inhaled.
Oral sedation is a prescription, often a pill or tablet, taken in advance of surgery.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation is a deeper form of sedation, which involves a sedative administered into the bloodstream. This option is more suitable for lengthy procedures, and when patients who are highly uncomfortable at the thought of a dental procedures. IV Sedation can be administered in a dental office by trained personnel or by an anesthesiologist.
