Sedation Dentistry in Cerritos CA
When your nerves make a butterflies-in-the-stomach appearance, you may find yourself hesitating to make a visit to your dentist. At the offices of Dr. Hofkes, we offer a variety of sedation dentistry options to help calm the dentist-chair jitters. Whether you come in for a teeth cleaning or oral surgery, keep one thing in mind: We will help make your experience relaxing and comfortable.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the use of sedatives to calm a patient during dental treatment. While the word “sedation” may cause you to think you will be sleeping, you will be conscious throughout the procedure. However, while you will be awake enough to follow the dentist’s instructions, you may do so without experiencing anxiety. Dr. Hofkes and our team will speak with you about your choices, from mild sedation to deep sedation, to determine the best course of action.
Am I a Good Candidate for Sedation?
Are you so anxious about getting your teeth cleaned that you can’t seem to make a dental appointment? Do you find you can handle teeth cleanings but anything more involved, such as fillings, causes you anxiety that prevents you from following through with dental procedures? Your dentist can help you feel calm before and during your dental appointment with sedation dentistry through the following sedation options:
- Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas” offers a calming effect while you are still conscious. The gas wears off immediately after your visit.
- Oral sedation, which includes taking a calming pill, is considered a moderate form of sedation. You will feel sleepy and will need a friend or loved one to drive you home after your visit while the sedative wears off.
- Oral sedation plus nitrous oxide offers just a bit more of a calming effect than oral sedation alone. This is well-suited to high-anxiety patients with a sensitive gag reflex who wish to avoid anesthesia.
- IV sedation, a treatment administered intravenously, is the deepest sedation dentistry option. This is appropriate for patients with a severe phobia of dental visits. You will be conscious during the procedure but may remember little or nothing of the experience once the sedative wears off.
Dr. Hofkes and our team will monitor you throughout your visit. If you choose IV sedation, he may choose to call on an anesthesiologist to administer the sedative if he deems it in the patient’s best interest. The anesthesiologist will closely monitor you while Dr. Hofkes dedicates his attention to your treatment.
