Sleep Apnea Treatment in Cerritos CA
Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you often feel exhausted during the day despite having slept the night before? If any of these symptoms sound familiar, then you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. OSA affects millions and can prevent you from receiving the rest you need to function during the day. At Cerritos Dental Surgery, Dr. Shawn Hofkes can identify and treat sleep apnea.
What is OSA?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that occurs when the sufferer stops breathing for brief periods during the night. The soft tissues in the back of the throat and mouth can become overly relaxed, blocking airflow. Once the person stops breathing, the brain is alerted and wakes the patient up to start breathing. While the patient often has no memory of being woken up, this cycle can happen hundreds of times every night.
How Do I Know If I Need Treatment?
Since most people have no recollection of the waking and sleeping cycle of sleep apnea, they must be on the look out for other warning signs, which include:
- Drowsiness during the day
- Waking up gasping for air
- Waking up choking
- Difficulty concentrating
If you encounter one or more of the above symptoms on a regular basis, you may need to see Dr. Hofkes for a diagnosis and to discuss possible treatment options. Otherwise, untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure and increase the risk of stroke and heart attack.
You may assume surgery is the only recourse for treating this sleep disorder. In fact, we can often address OSA with an oral appliance. Worn at night and similar in appearance to a nightguard, the device moves the jaw forward, which keeps airways open. For more severe cases, a CPAP machine may be recommended. The patient wears a mask over the nose and mouth, which forces air through and allows the patient to breathe easier. For more information or to discuss treatment options, please contact our office.
