A dentist may recommend sedation for a variety of reasons, ranging from dental anxiety to assisting patients with developmental disorders or medical complications that make receiving oral care a problem. We offer two distinct types of calming, which one is the best choice for your unique oral health needs? Do you need nitrous oxide or IV sedation?
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is also commonly referred to as laughing gas. As the name implies, a gas will be administered through a mask. The patient breathes in the nitrous oxide and enters a calm, relaxed state, conscious and able to respond to the dentist if necessary. The patient will have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. The effects wear off quickly, allowing many to return to work or school and drive themselves. Should a patient feel nervous about a procedure, we may recommend nitrous oxide.
IV Sedation
In some cases a patient may require a deeper form of relaxation. IV sedation is administered intravenously. As with the laughing gas, you will remain conscious and be able to respond to the dentist. However, you will likely have no memory of the procedure afterward. The effects will take longer to wear off. You should arrange for a friend or family member to bring you home. We also urge you to avoid driving for at least 24 hours. We will send any information regarding aftercare and follow-up visits with the person taking you home. Throughout the procedure we will monitor your vitals and we may an anesthesiologist on call.
