Gum Grafting
When patients experience sensitivity to food and drink temperatures, or if they notice that their teeth are looking longer, it could be a sign of receding gums. To help protect the roots of teeth, gum grafting may be recommended.
What Causes Receding Gums?
Gum recession is usually caused by periodontal disease. However, it can occur in people who smoke or be related to a person’s genetics, oral hygiene habits, or other illnesses they may have.
Treating Receding Gums
The first step in treating gum disease is to schedule a deep cleaning, also known as a scaling and root planing procedure. This will help remove plaque and tartar buildup. However, a gum graft procedure may be suggested if there is a more extensive recession.
Gum Grafts
There are three types of gum graft procedures.
- Connective tissue: This is the most common and is used to treat one or more areas. During the procedure, a flap is made in the roof of the mouth and tissue is removed from under the flap. This tissue is then stitched over the exposed root area.
- Free gingival: Similar to the connective tissue procedure, but the tissue is taken directly from the palate instead of from under a flap.
- Pedicle: This procedure is primarily for patients who have plenty of gum tissue near the area needing repair. The tissue is grafted from the gum adjacent to the tooth. It is sewn into place after being pulled over to cover the exposed root.
What Are The Benefits?
Gum grafts can help mitigate gum recession, bone loss, and tooth sensitivity. They also help patients achieve a more even gum line.
